Centrifugal pumps are widely used in water treatment, power plants, chemical plants, HVAC systems, mining, metallurgy and industrial circulation systems. On many projects, the pump motor runs at full speed and the flow or pressure is controlled by valves. This method is simple but may waste energy and increase stress on the pump, pipeline and motor.
For systems with varying flow or pressure demand, a VFD for centrifugal pump motor can be a practical solution. It is helpful to change the motor speed according to the real operating requirement, to decrease the starting current and to enhance the system control.
However, selecting a VFD is not simply a matter of motor horsepower. The appropriate choice should be based on electrical data and mechanical conditions of the pump.

1. Start from the Motor Nameplate
The first step is to check the nameplate of the motor. Motor power, rated voltage, rated current, frequency, rated speed, insulation class, protection grade and service duty to be supplied by the buyer.
Current among these details is especially important. The VFD should be sized using the motor's rated current and the overload requirement. Not just kW or HP.
For example, the rated current of two 250 kW motors may be different. If you select the VFD based on power alone, you might get a unit too small, too large or just not right for the real operating conditions.
If the motor is already installed on site, buyers should also check on cable length, grounding condition, motor insulation and suitability for variable-speed operation.
2. Check the Pump Operating Conditions
After checking the motor data, the next step is to review the actual pump operating conditions.
Before selecting a VFD for centrifugal pump motor, buyers should confirm the pump type, rated flow, pump head, working pressure and required operating range.
For systems where flow or pressure changes during operation, VFD speed control can help the pump match the actual demand instead of relying only on valve adjustment.
Buyers should also confirm whether the system requires constant pressure control, automatic speed adjustment or connection with pressure and flow sensors.

3. Choose the Right VFD Type
After confirming the motor and pump data, the next step is to choose the correct VFD type.
For low-voltage pump motors, buyers can consider the RENLE RNB2000 Low Voltage Variable Frequency Drive. This product is suitable for industrial low-voltage motor control applications and can be used when the project needs speed control, stable operation and flexible communication functions.
For large pump motors in power plants, water treatment, mining or heavy industrial systems, a medium-voltage solution may be required. In this case, buyers can consider the RENLE RNHV Series Medium Voltage VSD, especially when the motor voltage is 6kV, 10kV or another medium-voltage level.
This product recommendation should be based on motor voltage, rated current, power level, site environment and project control requirements.
4. Prepare These Details Before Requesting a Quotation
To get a faster, more accurate VFD recommendation, buyers should have the following information ready:
Rated voltage, rated current, rated power, rated speed, pump type, flow range, pressure range, pump head, working hours, control method, cable length, installation environment and cabinet requirement.
If the system needs to feature constant pressure control, PLC communication, remote monitoring, bypass cabinet, input reactor, output reactor or harmonic filter, such needs should also be confirmed before quotation.
For harsh environments such as high temperature, high humidity, dust or outdoor installation, the cabinet protection and cooling design should be carefully reviewed.
5. From Selection to Product Configuration
The proper VFD selection process should follow the following order:
1. Look at the motor nameplate.
2. Second, check pump curve and working point.
3. verify if the system needs speed control or constant pressure control.
5. choose low-voltage VFD or medium-voltage VFD based on the voltage of motor.
6. choose the suitable RENLE VFD product and cabinet configuration.
