When is a Containerized Medium Voltage VFD Appropriate?

Jun 04, 2026 Leave a message

Containerized MV VFD A containerized medium voltage Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is a tailored drive solution, which incorporates the medium voltage variable frequency drive, transformer, control cabinet, switchgear, cooling system and auxiliary equipment into a containerized structure.

A containerized VFD solution is more suitable for projects where speedier installation, outdoor installation or easier mobility are required as opposed to a standard indoor electrical room installation.

What is a medium voltage VFD in a container?

A containerized medium voltage VFD is not simply a VFD cabinet in a container. It is a fully integrated drive solution that is designed based on motor power, voltage level, site environment and application requirements. This solution combines the main electrical and control components into one containerized structure, which facilitates transportation, installation and on-site commissioning compared to a traditional indoor installation.

It is especially good for projects with limited space for an electrical room, for outdoor or remote installation, or where faster project deployment is important. The containerized design can also enhance system integration and make maintenance easier for industrial applications such as pumps, fans, compressors, mining, water treatment, cement plants and power stations.

The system may include:

Medium Voltage VFD Cabinet

The main VFD cabinet for motor control, designed for reliable and efficient operation of medium voltage drives.

Phase-Shifting Transformer

Transformer cabinet for voltage and power regulation, ensuring stable input to the VFD system.

Control Cabinet

Integrates the controller, HMI, and signal interface for local and remote operation.

Switchgear or Bypass Cabinet

Provides system protection and bypass functionality to maintain continuous operation.

Cooling and Ventilation System

Ensures optimal operating temperature and ventilation for all VFD components.

HMI and Monitoring System

User interface and monitoring system for real-time control, status display, and diagnostics.

When is it required?

Where No Electrical Room Exists:

Some industrial sites may not have room to establish an electrical room. Building a new room involves civil construction, ventilation, cable routing and extra installation time.

A containerized VFD eliminates the requirement for a standard electrical room and simplifies site prep.

02/

When Quick Installation Is Needed:

For projects with a tight timetable, a containerized VFD might help decrease work on site. The major equipment can be pre-integrated prior to delivery, so the customer mainly needs to perform foundation placement, cable connection and commissioning on site.

When the Site is Remote or Outside:

Mining, oil and gas, water treatment, cement factories, power plants and pumping stations are among areas where containerized medium voltage VFDs can be used. These sites may be remote from normal infrastructure or may have to be set up outdoors or semi-outdoors.The containerized construction can be constructed to include ventilation, cooling, cable entrance and protection suitable for the local environment.

System integration: where it counts:

Just the drive cabinet is often not sufficient for a medium voltage VFD system. It may also require a transformer, control cabinet, switchgear, bypass cabinet and communication interface.

The components are integrated in one system by means of a containerized solution, which facilitates the coordination of interfaces and simplifies the management of the complete project.

Where the Convenience of Maintenance Matters:

Continuous manufacturing industries cannot afford downtime. A containerized VFD can be constructed with maintenance doors, internal layout space and easy access for inspection and service.

Typical Applications

Containerized medium voltage VFDs are typically used for:

Ventilating fans for mines

Water supply pumps

Pumps for sewage treatment

Compressors.

Fans for cement plants

Petrochemical pump

Auxiliary motors for power plants

Oil and gas field equipment

Conclusion

For projects that need fast installation, outdoor installation, less civil construction or integrated system delivery, a containerized medium voltage VFD is the right choice.

This is particularly useful for remote industrial locations, retrofits and large motor control applications.

RENLE offers medium voltage VFD systems, and custom containerized VFD solutions for pumps, fans, compressors and other industrial applications.
