How to Choose the Right Motor Control Solution?
Choosing between a VFD or a soft starter isn't just about motor power. Different industrial applications have different types of loads, starting requirements, operating environments, and control needs.
For overseas customers the question is not so much "Which product is cheaper?" but "Which solution is more suitable for my equipment and site conditions?"
RENLE provides VFDs, soft starters and complete motor control solutions for water treatment, mining, metallurgy, petrochemical, oil & gas, power plants, cement, building materials and paper making industries.
High Reliability

Complete Solution
Smooth Starting
Reduce motor starting current and mechanical impact, especially for pumps, crushers, conveyors, and large motors.
Speed Control
Adjust motor speed according to pressure, flow, load, or production demand for better process control.
Energy Saving
For pumps and fans with variable load demand, VFDs can help reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
Global Application
Suitable for multiple industrial fields, including water treatment, mining, metallurgy, oil & gas, and power plants.
Application Selection Guide
Water Treatment and Pumping Systems
In water supply, drainage, irrigation and pumping stations, pumps often require a smooth start to minimise current impact and pipe stress.
For a pump that needs only a smooth start and stop, a soft starter is a practical choice. If the system needs constant pressure, flow adjustment or energy saving, then a VFD is usually more appropriate.
Mining and Heavy-Duty Equipment
Mining equipment usually works under heavy load and harsh conditions. Typical applications include crushers, ball mills, belt conveyors, ventilation fans and drainage pumps.
Soft starters can help reduce the starting impact for heavy load machines such as crushers, ball mills. VFDs are recommended for fans, conveyors and pumps requiring speed control.

Cement and Building Materials
In cement plants many motors are used for fans, pumps, crushers, mills and conveyors. Many of these systems run all the time and therefore have to be stable and energy efficient.
VFDs work great with fans and pumps with varying load demands. Soft starters are ideal for fixed-speed equipment where you want to reduce starting current and protect equipment.
Metallurgy and Power Plants
High reliability and continuous operation are needed in metallurgical and power plant applications. Common equipment includes cooling pumps, dust removal fans, water circulating pumps and auxiliary motors.
If you need speed control, flow control or system adjustment, VFDs are the better option. If only reduced starting current is needed, a soft starter may be selected.

Choose Wisely
Whether you choose a VFD or a soft starter depends on the actual application, not just the motor power. In water treatment and pumping systems, customers generally pay attention to smooth starting, pressure control and energy saving. In the mining, cement and heavy duty industries overload capacity, starting torque, dust protection and mechanical protection are more important. For application in petrochemical, oil & gas, metallurgy and power plant, the stable operation, power supply conditions, communication requirements and long term reliability should also be considered.
In general, a soft starter is appropriate if the motor needs a soft start and operates at a constant speed. VFD is recommended when the system requires speed control, constant pressure, constant flow, synchronisation, energy saving or automatic process control. Customers can confirm the application, load type, control requirement and site conditions to select a more suitable motor control solution for different industrial applications.
